Practical notes for groups in Italy

  • Many historic centres are restricted traffic zones (ZTL); we plan coach permits and drop-off points in advance.
  • Major museums require timed entry for groups, so dates should be confirmed early.

FAQ

Group tours in Italy: your questions

When is the best time for a group tour of Italy?

April to June and September to October are ideal. July and August are hot and crowded, and around the 15 August holiday (Ferragosto) many local businesses close. Winter suits city-focused programmes in Rome, Florence and Venice.

Can tour coaches enter Italian city centres?

Most historic centres are limited traffic zones (ZTL). Rome, Florence and Venice also run coach permit and entry-fee systems. We arrange the permits and plan approved drop-off points, so the group never waits for an unplanned transfer.

Do groups need local licensed guides in Italy?

Yes. At many major sites, including the Colosseum, the Vatican, Pompeii and the Florence museums, only locally licensed guides may lead groups. We book them for every main visit, alongside the tour leader who travels with your group.

Which Italian sights should groups book early?

The Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Accademia (Michelangelo's David) and above all Leonardo's Last Supper in Milan, which has very limited group slots. We secure them as soon as your dates are confirmed.

Can Italy be combined with Switzerland or France?

Yes. Northern Italy connects by coach with the Swiss lakes and Alps and with the French Riviera. Our multi-country itinerary links Paris, Switzerland and Italy, and the Italy group itinerary covers the classic route from Rome to Venice.
