Good to know

Practical notes for groups in Portugal

  • Lisbon is built on seven hills: we plan walking tours around group mobility and use tuk-tuks or minibuses where coaches can't reach.
  • Douro river cruises and quinta lunches book up quickly in harvest season (September and October).

FAQ

Group tours in Portugal: your questions

When is the best time for a group tour of Portugal?

April to June and September to October bring warm weather and fewer crowds. The Douro Valley grape harvest runs from late September into early October, and the Algarve is pleasant from spring to late autumn. Inland summers are hot.

Can coaches reach Lisbon's old quarters and Sintra?

Not fully. Alfama and other historic neighbourhoods are steep and narrow, so groups explore on foot, by tram or by tuk-tuk. In Sintra, full-size coaches cannot drive up to Pena Palace, so we use the local shuttle service.

When is Fátima busiest?

The great pilgrimages on 12 and 13 May and 12 and 13 October draw very large crowds, and hotels fill months ahead. For other dates Fátima is calm, and we plan visits around the main services.

Can groups visit port wine cellars in Porto?

Yes. The historic port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, welcome groups for guided cellar tours and tastings. We reserve a slot and can add a Douro river cruise or a quinta lunch in the valley.

Can Portugal be combined with Spain?

Easily. Porto is about three hours by coach from Santiago de Compostela, and Lisbon about five hours from Seville. See our Spain page or the Portugal group itinerary.
